The incident happened just after 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25 in North Amityville.
Suffolk County First Precinct Patrol officers responded to a 911 report of an injured pedestrian on westbound Sunrise Highway, near Bayview Avenue.
When officers arrived on the scene, they found the injured man lying in the roadway, police said.
The 30-year-old victim, whose identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip in serious condition.
Following an investigation, detectives determined the man was struck by a motor vehicle that fled the scene.
The investigation is continuing.
